In St Johnsbury, Vermont, there is a unique
Stephen Huneck Gallery
Folk artist, Stephen Huneck is probably best known for the illustrations of his beloved black lab, Sally. There are images of her everywhere on Dog Mountain. In his Gallery, you can buy original carvings and artwork of Sally and her canine friends. They also sell Hunecks books, t-shirts, and gift items for every budget.
Dog Chapel
The idea to build a Dog Chapel came to Stephen Huneck in a vision soon after he experienced a near-death experience. While recovering from two months in a coma, Huneck said he felt compelled to create “a place that celebrated the spiritual bond we have with our dogs, a place that would be open to all dogs and to people of any faith or belief system.”
One of the most striking ways people celebrate the canine/human spiritual bond at the Dog Chapel is through the hanging notes of remembrance and photos on the walls. Initially, Stephen Huneck put aside just one wall where people could post pictures and memories about their departed pets. The entire chapel is now covered. Visitors are welcome to add photos to a book in the foyer.
Outdoors at Dog Mountain
You can visit the Dog Chapel and the surrounding grounds any day between dawn and dusk. The Stephen Huneck gallery is open on Monday and Friday from 11 am-4 pm. On weekends the Gallery is open from 10 am-5 pm. Dog Mountain also hosts a dog friendly concert series and pet parties throughout the year. Please check out their schedule online.
This is a great article!! Dog Mountain is such a wonderful place to visit! Even more special if you bring your 4 legged friend! Thank you, Louis, for sharing!
This is both informative and entertaining.
Gorgeous photos! What a wonderful spot to honor dogs!
It was the perfect place to stop between Boston & Montreal too
I’m not too far from Dog Mountain but I’ve yet to get there! I feel like I’m missing out as a Vermont Dog Mom, haha
It took me years to go myself. It’s always the stuff that’s close by that we take for granted!
Loved this article. Thank you for sharing. I’m only about an hour from there. I’ll have to visit it 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰
It’s a really magical place! We just happened to visit on the same day they were having a free concert. The pups were allowed to attend, along with visiting the chapel and gallery.
